ALBINISM IS A GENETIC CONDITION- "ENGAGE NOW AFRICA" DIRECTOR

Story Reported by Gideon Kotey

The Director for "Engage Now Africa", a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), Mr. Francis Yaw Ansah, has disclosed that Albinism is a genetic condition .

According to him Persons with Albinism are not to be called albinos, that the word Albino is a derogatory word. He continued by saying that they are ordinary people just like any other person and they should be accorded with the needed respect for the beauty of Ghana's democracy.

The Director of the Foundation made known at a Ghana Federation of Disability collaborated Community sensitization program for Persons with Albinism in Accra yesterday.

The event was attended by hundreds of people including Traditional Leaders within the Sempe Traditional Council.
"Persons with Albinism do not have magical powers so we should embrace each other as one people so that we can all live together as one" he stated.

He added that the ultra violet  rays from the sun causes sore on the skins of Person with Albinism which leads to skin cancer among them due to lack of Melanin in their skin.
Melanin is what gives the skin color and protect one from the ultra violet rays of the sun.

"It will be Godly we treat each other with love and respect rather than underrate other members of our society" Mr. Ansah stated.

For her part, Mrs. Mawunyo,  President of Ghana Federation of Disability (GFD) applauded the Foundation and pleads that it continues to render supports to Persons with Albinism  accross the length and breadth of the country.

She also called on other agencies, the Government and individuals to render supports to Persons with Albinism.

She was happy that parents have now realised Albinism is not a disease or a  curse and are now giving their Albinism children the needed love and support.
