The World Menstrual Hygiene Day could not have been successful without your prayers, words of motivations and other supports in diverse ways as the Women's Wing of Suhum Constituency collaborated with the Ministry of Health on the above subject matter.

The Women's Wing on Thursday invited several resourced personnels to give education on how to keep hygiene during menstruation: it's benefits and negative effects of not adhering to the guidelines. This was targeted at female youths. Some of such invited guests were the Deputy Regional Women's Organizer and Comrade Bridget Bonnie, the founder of 18+ for NDC, amongst others.

The programme was held in Suhum Presbyterian Senior High School and was massively patronized.

The Wing donated some 800 pieces of sanitary pads, 800 pieces of shaving sticks, other items and snacks to Eight Hundred (800) female students,  who participated in this programme.

The Wing remains focused and poised in making sure strategies are put in places for bringing the Party to Power.

Speaking to the media madam Lydia Ohenewa said  “Each day, some 800 million people between the ages of 15 - 49 are menstruating. Yet for so many, a natural biological process spells more than a monthly inconvenience. “

In some countries, menstruation is taboo or riddled with myths, and women and girls are excluded from daily activities because of stigma, shame or discrimination or because they are considered unclean. In others, menarche may lead to child marriage or sexual violence because it signals a girl is ready for motherhood or sexual activity. Girls may miss school because they do not have access to sanitary supplies, they are in pain or their schools lack adequate sanitary facilities. Some girls do not understand what’s happening to their bodies. And more than 26 million women and girls are estimated to be displaced because of conflict or climate disaster, robbing them of dignity when they have difficulty managing their periods and exacerbating their vulnerability.

While some countries have addressed period poverty, or the hardship of affording menstrual products, more can be done, especially in normalizing something 1.9 billion people of reproductive age do – girls, women, transgender men and nonbinary people. Menstruation should not mean the end of rights to health, dignity and gender equality.

The Wing led by Madam Lydia Ohenewa Afasi again used this opportunity as a medium to appeal to the government, major policy makers and other relevant stakeholders to review taxes on sanitary pads for our women and youths, especially, the less privileged ones for easy affordability.

Madam Josephine Nana Korang who is the Deputy Women's Organizer also reiterated to the congregation the adverse effect to adhering to these guidelines during menstruation and urged them to approach school leadership for any help relating to keeping menstrual hygiene.

The Girls Prefect of the School in her votes of thanks, acknowledged the fact that, this has been the first and remarkable programme organized on the above subject matter in the school.

In conclusion, the Women's Wing of Suhum NDC wishes to acknowledge the following Personalities for their immense contribution. Chairman Mark-Oliver Kevor, the Regional Chairman, Eastern Region, William Kwame Atamudzi, the former Vice Regional Chairman, Comrade Atta Bamfo, UK, Rita Awartey, the Deputy Regional Women's Organizer, Bridget Bonnie, Florence Ama Brooks, Mable Ofori-Ansah and some of the Constituency Executives who represented and supported the Wing throughout.
